Equine Mega Worming
We diligently worm our horses with the change of seasons. Some horses get wormed monthly, weekly, and even daily. Wormers are so common place; the cost of worming a horse is cheaper than having the old-fashioned fecal check done to see if your horse even has worms. Would we take an aspirin if we didn't have a headache? No. Then why are we treating our horses for a condition that they might possibly not even have? It is mind boggling that this mega-worming frenzy has become such common practice. Where does it end? Scientific speculation is that we are going to end up with super resistant, super worms. What will we do for our horses then?
Some boarding stables have strict rules about worming and the boarders are expected to comply. For stables where the horses are all turned out on the same pasture, this is a must according to the farm managers.
They say you can't worm one horse unless you worm them all. I disagree. I think we need to get back to doing fecal checks on a routine basis. I think the fecal checks should be affordable. We need to re-establish a common-sense practice of only worming the horses that need wormed, and not medicate the others just because they happen to be in the vicinity.
To the horse persons lucky enough to have their own farms and their horses in the back yards, approaching this mega-worming issue becomes easier and I encourage you to talk to your veterinarians about worm management. As an added note here for those that farm organically, when you worm your horse or medicate them in any way, the subsequent resulting manure should not be composted. It is no longer a base for healthy, organic decomposition and future fertilization.

Wacky Worm Fishing Faq
You can fish with worms for a variety of fish, from trout to bass to salmon. Wacky worms are used to fish for big bass. If you are new to fishing with like this, here are answers to frequently asked questions about fishing with these kinds of baits.
What is a "wacky worm?"
Well, it is a style of fishing, rather than a product you buy. If you are going to set bait like this, you use a long thin one (often plastic, such as Zoom Trick Worms and centipedes). Then you set the long bait in the middle, so that it forms a U shape. Wacky style fishing can be used in bait casting gear as well as spinning gear. Often large bass that hang out in the bottom of the water will suck in a whole thing fished wacky style.
What is the advantage of using this?
If fishing conditions are tough, and the fish are hiding under cover, this technique can sometimes bring out large bass. Often you let it float (un-weighted), or only slightly weighted so that the thing slowly sinks through the water, so that it looks like it is wounded. They are also effective slowly drawn through underwater grasses or other vegetation, as it draws out post-spawn fish and large open mouth bass from hiding places.
Should the wacky worm sink quickly?
No, with this particular type of bait you want it to slowly slide by, so that it looks as natural as if it fell off a branch and is slowly sinking to the bottom.
Mine often tear when I set them wacky style. Is there help for this?
This is a common problem, and most only last through two fish when they're set this way. In answer to your question, yes, you can prevent this tearing. You can buy tools of various types that will protect your imitation baits from tearing. These types of tools allow you to set the worm without sticking the hook through the plastic bait. A good trident tool can make your bait last through 20 or more catches.
How does a wacky worm rigging work?
There are several on the market, but the best ones utilize a vertical hook presentation. A small piece of metal pierces through the bait. The hook is set in the tip of the metal piece that pierces through it. This way, pressure and nibbling will not result in torn or damaged bait.

Fishing With Red Worms
One of the best baits for fishing is the red worm and in this article I'm going to provide some tips for fishing with red worms that will make you a much more effective angler. I was introduces to the red worm by my fishing mentor in central Pennsylvania. Before being introduced to red worms I always used night crawlers for fishing. My mentor enlightened me to the fact that these worms can be much better bait than night crawlers for fishing, especially in certain situations.
This type of worm is much smaller than their night crawling cousins, who many times have to be pinched in half to use effectively as fishing bait. At the end of the day a red worm look just like a baby night crawler and is much more effective as fishing bait, especially when fishing in rivers and streams.
When fishing with red worms it's important to use gang hooks to rig them effectively.
This way your red worms can be presented outstretched, they way God intended. Gang hooks are a pair of small hooks tied in tandem, and when fishing with red worm's size 8 or 10 gang hooks should always be used. Truth be told, with red worms size 10 should usually be employed. Size 10 hooks are small enough to be hidden by the worms body yet aren't detectable to the fish. If you think size 10 hooks are too small to catch large fish, consider the fact that I personally hook and land 3-5 pound trout and smallmouth bass on size 10 gang hooks.
Fishing with red worms obviously also involves carrying your worms with you, and having an effective way to accomplish this task is also important. Having an effective way to carry your red worms is especially important to the river/stream angler. Just throwing the Styrofoam container in your fishing vest will work, but having an effective red worm carrier is a big plus.
An effective worm carrier keeps your worms within easy reach, while still keeping your hands free for fishing.
This way your worms are always at your fingertips and you know exactly where they are at all times. The most effective worm carrier that I've ever come across is the JRW bait bag. This is simply a small pouch that clips to your fishing vest, shirt, or pants and carries your live worms while fishing. The use of a bait bag is a must for anyone that's fishing with red worms.
My favorite place to use red worms for fishing is in the flowing waters of rivers and/or streams. Allowing a red worm to flow naturally with the current, as it rolls along the bottom, is an extremely effective fishing technique. This technique is effective for trout, bass, and walleye. Heck, it's effective for any fish that swims in the current of your favorite river or stream. The bottom line is that fishing with these worms can be much more effective than fishing with other worm species.

Dog Worms – Has Your Dog Been Infected?
Article by Douglas Hanna
Here's the thing about dogs. First, they forage for food - just like many animals. Second, they'll eat just about anything, including feces.
Because of these two traits, dogs are very prone to developing worms - worms which can make them sick and even kill them. This includes heartworms, hookworms, roundworms, whipworms, and tapeworms.
So how can you tell if your dog is suffering from any of these worms?
Here are the worms that are most likely to infest your dog and their symptoms.
Hookworms
Hookworms are usually found in dog feces. If your dog has a habit of eating feces, watch for this illness. The symptoms of hookworms include loose stool or blood in the stool, bloating, gas, and an unusual appetite. Also, the dog's coat may become duller.
Roundworms
Roundworms are caused when the dog ingests the egg of the roundworm. Also puppies can become infected through their mother. Signs to look for that your dog has roundworms include vomiting, diarrhea, bloating, gas, and an unusual appetite.
Heartworms
Heartworms most often come from mosquitoes. This usually occurs during the warmer months when dogs are exposed to these pests. Heartworms are very dangerous and, if left untreated, can actually kill your dog. Symptoms to watch out for include lethargy, coughing, loss of appetite, and difficulty breathing. You might also notice that your dog is becoming more tired than usual after exercise. This condition needs to be treated immediately by a vet.
Tapeworms
Tapeworms occur when dogs eat fleas. While this may not be a pleasant exercise, you should regularly check the dog's rectum to see if there are any white, rice-like parasites in the area. If you, the dog is almost sure to have tapeworms. Symptoms of these worms include an inability to digest food, weight loss, and stomach pain.
Whipworm
Whipworm occurs when dogs eat worm-infested feces or when they step in feces and then lick their paws. A dog with whipworm will often have a bloody stool, an unusual appetite, and will become bloated, experience cramps, and have a dull coat.
Other conditions that can affect your dog's health include Coccidia which are parasites caused by ingesting feces. Symptoms of this disease include loose stool, vomiting, loss of weight, and bloating.
Another parasite which can affect pups is called Giardia. These parasites are found mostly in areas where there is a lot of water. The ingestion of Giardia can cause loose stool, loss of weight, and bloating.
The key is early detection
Early detection is the key to treating these illnesses. If your dog displays any of the symptoms listed in this article, be sure to get it to your vet for a checkup. Also, make sure your dog receives regular check-ups as this gives your vet the opportunity to check for worms and other conditions by taking stool samples.
It is always better to err on the side of caution and carefully watch your dog's behavior and habits. If theychange in any way, make an appointment with your vet to get the problem diagnosed and treatment started immediately.
